About Salem, VA
Salem is home to nearly 25,000 residents and was once the county seat of Roanoke County. The county courthouse and executive offices are still found within the city limits, but sit on unincorporated land. Salem was founded in 1802 and received its charter in 1806. The origin of the city's name has been long since lost to history, though the most widely accepted story is that it was named in honor of a prominent citizen who had moved there from Salem, NJ. Salem was twice attacked by the Union Army during the American Civil War, but its Salem Flying Artillery is believed to have fired the last Confederate shot at Appomattox Court House prior to General Robert E. Lee's surrender.
