What Does the Timing Belt Do?

The process of combustion is finely tuned and precise: an intake valve opens in a combustion chamber (or cylinder) to let in a mixture of fuel and air. The valve closes, and a piston moves upwards. The spark plug ignites this mixture, which combusts to push the cylinder down. Finally, an exhaust valve opens to let out the exhaust. The timing belt synchronizes the crankshaft and the camshaft or camshafts, which means that it is responsible for making the valves and pistons move at the correct time.

Does My Toyota Have a Timing Belt?

Many Toyota vehicles don't have a timing belt at all. Instead, they are equipped with timing chains, which serve the exact same purpose. Timing chains are heavier and louder than belts, but they also don't have to be replaced regularly as timing belts do. You may find that certain model years have timing belts, while others have chains. Take the Toyota RAV4, for example. From 1996 until 2000, Toyota RAV4 models were equipped with timing belts. Since 2001, they have instead been outfitted with timing chains. Whether your Toyota has a timing belt or a timing chain may also depend on which engine your vehicle has. From 1995 until now, the Toyota Tacoma with a 4-cylinder engine has come with a timing chain. From 1995 until 2004, the Toyota Tacoma with a V6 had a timing belt; the upgrade to a timing chain on the V6 only came in 2005.

There are two other options beside timing belts and timing chains. Certain older Land Cruiser models came with a timing gear instead of either. And, if you have a Toyota EV, the electric motor requires neither a timing belt nor a timing chain.

What Happens if the Timing Belt Breaks?

If your Toyota has a freewheeling engine (also known as a non-interference engine), a broken timing belt will simply cause the engine to stop. But if you have a vehicle with an interference engine, a broken timing belt will cause pistons to strike valves, doing irreparable damage to your engine.
