With the RAV4, Toyota engineers put safety and comfort first. While many experts predicted the RAV4 to be remodeled in 2012, Toyota stuck to the time-honored RAV4 design for another year, earning this midsize crossover a place in the SUV hall of fame.

2012 Toyota RAV4 Performance and Handling

Available with a four-cylinder or six-cylinder engine, with all-wheel drive or front-wheel drive, the Toyota RAV4 is endlessly accommodating. Fortunately, it's also easy on the budget, making the RAV4 practical for a variety of different consumers. The 2.5L four-cylinder puts out 179 hp with a highway fuel mileage of 28 mpg for two-wheel drive or 27 mpg for four-wheel drive. The 3.5L V6 engine, which many prefer for its unparalleled power output and excellent fuel economy, delivers 269 hp while only losing one point of fuel economy across the board. The V6 also has a five-speed automatic transmission, a necessary step up from the four-speed standard on RAV4s with the 2.5L engine equipped. In Edmunds.com testing, the RAV4 with V6 and all-wheel drive achieved an impressively powerful performance of 0 mph to 60 in just about 7 seconds, unheard of for this class of SUVs. "If you can afford the price increase, reviewers say the V6 engine is well worth the upgrade," reports U.S. News and World Report, which ranked the 2012 Toyota RAV4 fifth for affordable compact SUVs.

2012 Toyota RAV4 Exterior and Interior

Just as the equipment under the hood can be customized to your personal preferences, the exterior of the Toyota RAV4 comes in a variety of specifications. On the base trim, 16-inch steel wheels are standard, with 17-inch steel or alloy wheels, a sunroof, privacy glass and roof rack optional with the Upgrade Value package. On the next step up, the Sport trim, 18-inch alloy wheels are standard to go with the sportier suspension. You can swap out the tailgate-mounted spare tire design of the other trims for a flatter façade, only available on this trim. Like the base trim, a sunroof and roof rack are optional upgrades. On the top-of-the-line Limited trim, the 17-inch alloy wheels are back, but the tailgate-mounted spare tire is too, and this time it comes with a hard-shell spare tire cover. The roof rack is standard this time around, as is a cargo cover, but the elusive sunroof is still an upgrade. While the aesthetic of the Toyota RAV4 may be conservative, its ability to be customized endlessly makes this an aggressive competitor in this market.

Interior options are no less extensive. The Limited has the option of a third row, expanding the standard seating capacity from five to seven people. Upgraded upholstery begins as an option on the base trim and is standard on the Sport, but leather is available on the Sport and Limited for consumers looking for that luxury feel. The RAV4 boasts an impressive 73 cubic feet of cargo space when the second row is folded down, which is easy to do with Toyota's 60/40 split and sliding system. For connectivity, Toyota offers not only its premier Entune Multimedia System, but also a navigation system with advanced voice recognition on the Limited and Optitron instrumentation standard on all trims.

2012 Toyota RAV4 Safety Features

The Toyota logo boldly branded on the grille means one thing: Safety. With Toyota's standard Star Safety System, all RAV4 trims have Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control, traction control, an anti-lock brake system, an electronic brake-force distribution system, brake assist and Smart Stop Technology. Six airbags are peppered throughout the cabin, protecting your loved ones in the event of a crash. Downhill Assist Control and Hill Start Assist Control are available on base and Limited Trims, and daytime running lights are available across all models. You can rest assured that you'll stay on the road despite poor driving conditions, and the RAV4's heavy steel frame provides feel-good peace of mind.
