Performance and Handling

The Toyota Division group vice president and general manager, Bob Carter, has been quoted as saying, "The all-new 2012 Camry blends an evolution of the car's values âā¬" such as comfort, efficiency, reliability and safety âā¬" with a more appealing design and engaging driving experience." Customers can see this present in all three of the powertrains offered on the Camry, all of which include enhancements for 2012 in order to boost fuel economy and performance. The revised 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with Dual VVT-i (Dual Variable Valve Timing-intelligent) and Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS) now boasts 178 horsepower, 170 pound-feet of peak torque, and EPA-estimated fuel economy of 25 MPG city/35 MPG highway/28 MPG combined. This is 9 horsepower and 2 combined MPG more than the previous engine. |

Meanwhile, the 3.5-liter DOHC V6 engine with chain-driven camshafts and Dual VVT-i that is available on the SE and XLE trim levels generates 268 horsepower at 6,200 rpm, 248 pound-feet of peak torque at 4,700 rpm, and increased fuel economy of an EPA-estimated 21 MPG city/30 MPG highway. That makes this V6 midsize sedan the most fuel efficient in its current class. As far as transmissions, every LE, XLE, and SE model equipped with a gas engine comes with a 6-speed automatic transmission with sequential manual shift mode, intelligent control, and an automatic transmission fluid warmer, and higher final drive-gear ratios over previous models to boost fuel economy. SE models additionally get "D range" sequential shifting with new steering wheel paddle shifters, plus faster shift times when in "S" mode and downshift blipping control.

The 2012 Camry Hybrid has a drastically redesigned 200-horsepower Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain, which includes a small high-torque electric motor and a new 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle four-cylinder engine that replaces the old 2.4-liter. This new 2.5-liter includes a Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) system, a new water-cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system, an electric water pump, a roller-rocker type valvetrain, and a variable-output oil pump. This powertrain also includes an ECO mode and a new-for-2012 EV Drive mode that lets you run the Camry using the electric motor only. Additionally, lighter vehicle weight and optimized aerodynamics help boost fuel efficiency. When all this technology is combined, it allows the Camry Hybrid to meet AT-PZEV (Advanced Technology Partial-credit Zero Emissions Vehicle) standards and, on the LE model, to increase its EPA city and combined driving cycles by more than 30%, giving it fuel economy of an EPA-estimated 43 mpg city/39 mpg highway/41 mpg combined. The Camry Hybrid also boasts a zero-to-60 acceleration time of only 7.6 seconds, putting it between the four-cylinder and V6 models in terms of performance. |
