A Quick Look at the 2018 Toyota Highlander

The first thing you'll notice when you set your eyes upon the 2018 Highlander is the bold looking front of the SUV. Toyota refreshed the front grille on the vehicle to be larger and somewhat more aggressive in 2017 and added redesigned LED taillights to the back of the vehicle.

The Highlander carries over pretty much all the features from last year into the 2018 model. You can take your pick from three different engine configurations on the midsized SUV. The standard powerplant is a 2.7L engine that delivers 185 horsepower and 184 lb-ft torque. A more powerful 3.5L V6 is also available that is capable of generating 295 horsepower and 263 lb-ft torque. Finally, there is a hybrid powertrain option that utilizes the 3.5L gas engine with three electric motors.

Toyota has now made the Toyota Safety Sense™ package standard across all trims in the 2018 Highlander lineup. This advanced security suite includes Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Protection and automatic high beams. It's just another example of Toyota's commitment to building not only the most dependable vehicles on the road, but also the safest cars available as well.

History of the Toyota Highlander

The Highlander was first introduced to North America in 2001 as one of the first car based crossovers to ever hit the market. The vehicle was an immediate hit and for a brief time the Highlander was Toyota's best-selling SUV before being replaced by the RAV4 around 2006. The Highlander became known for its roomy and well-appointed interior that held a virtual laundry list of standard and available equipment.

Toyota redesigned the Highlander for the 2008 model year. This model Highlander saw an increase in interior room, a standard V6 power plant under the hood and a larger third row seat. The "crossover craze" was beginning to hit during this time period and the Highlander saw unprecedented sales success as a result.

The third generation of the Highlander was launched for the 2015 model year and there have been some enhancements in the years following. The vehicle continues to perform well in the crossover SUV segment, and Toyota has made slight style changes to the 2017 model year Highlander.
