| Toyota aficionados have been clamoring for information about the FT-86 Concept car since it debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 2009. It now appears that the concept will become reality in the United States come the third quarter of 2012 as the Scion FR-S. |

| The FT-86 Concept car, designed in partnership by Toyota and Subaru as an homage to Toyota's iconic AE86 Corolla model, has been through a few changes since that October 2009 introduction. The initial FT-86 Concept was itself derived from an earlier concept car, the FT-HS (Hybrid Sport), and featured a light front engine, rear-wheel drive, a new 2L flat-four engine co-designed by the two automakers, and a modified Subaru Impreza 101.2-inch wheelbase. In March 2011, the FT-86 II Concept was presented at the Geneva Motor Show, featuring increased dimensions, redesigned bumpers and head/tail lights, and the addition of a rear spoiler and side vents. Toyota announced that the production model of this concept will debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in October, with European sales beginning in 2012. It has been speculated that this concept will be marketed under the Celica name in Europe and Asia, marking the first use of that branding since 2006. |

| As for the American market, stateside enthusiasts got a peek at what's in store at the New York International Auto Show in April, where the Scion FR-S Sports Coupe Concept made its debut. It features a 2+2 fast back body style (in contrast to the 3-door hatchback body styling of the FT-86 II), a front-engine / rear-wheel drive platform, the aforementioned 2.0L flat-four engine, and six-speed manual transmission.
