The 2012 Toyota 4Runner comes well-equipped with a 4.0L V6 DOHC engine with Dual Independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i), which produces 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. Available to the Limited trim is full-time 4WD with Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) and Torsen limited-slip center differential with locking feature. RWD builds receive 17 city/23 highway/19 combined mpg, while all-wheel drive builds get 17 city/22 highway/19 combined mpg. For additional off-roading capabilities, higher trims also offer upgraded suspensions. The Limited trim comes standard with an upgraded X-REAS Sport Enhancement Suspension, and the Trail trim offers an available Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS). | |

Standard Features & Options
Each of the 2012 4Runner's trims equips its driver for slightly varied driving conditions. The well-rounded base SR5 trim comes with a variety of features and capable performance worthy of travel both on the road and off. Key features standard on the SR5 include halogen headlamps with auto-off, integrated fog lamps, skid plates, air conditioning, AM/FM CD player with MP3/WMA playback capability (includes eight speakers, SiriusXM Satellite Radio capability with three-month trial subscription to XM Select Package, auxiliary audio jack, USB port with iPod connectivity, hands-free phone capability and music streaming via Bluetooth wireless technology), a Multi-Information Display, fabric-trimmed front seats, cruise control, a tilt/telescopic steering wheel with audio, Bluetooth hands-free phone and voice-command controls, an in-key remote keyless entry system, power windows, and a power liftgate.
The upgraded Limited trim offers more day-to-day convenience and aesthetic upgrades, including multi-reflector halogen headlamps with auto on/off feature, exterior and interior trim upgrades, larger 20-inch alloy wheels, dual zone automatic climate control with air filter and second-row vents, Display Audio with Navigation and Entune, leather-trimmed and multi-stage heated front seats, leather-trimmed 40/20/40 split reclining and fold-flat second-row seats, a leather-trimmed tilt/telescopic steering wheel, Optitron instrumentation, and the Smart Key System with Push Button Start and remote illuminated entry.
The premium Trail trim offers the 4Runner's most capable off-roading performance and features, including unique interior and exterior trim detailing, water-resistant fabric-trimmed front seats, water-resistant fabric-trimmed 40/20/40 split reclining and fold-flat second-row seats, an overhead console with HomeLink universal transceiver, and Multi-terrain Select, which includes Active Traction Control (A-TRAC), VSC cutoff, and locking rear differential and Crawl Control switches.

Safety Features
The 2012 Toyota 4Runner faired very well in testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, earning "Good" ratings in frontal offset, side impact and rear crash tests.
